BROCKPORT, N.Y. (AP) _ More than 300 girls from across the state are in Brockport for a weeklong workshop focused on leadership and the American political process.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will speak at the 72nd annual Empire Girls State workshop Monday afternoon. It's being held at SUNY Brockport.
The event is sponsored by the New York State American Legion Auxiliary. High school juniors participate in creating a mythical 51st state with 11 counties. They're assigned to either the Nationalist or Federalist party, participate in political campaigns, debates, and drafting of legislation.
