Area vets trekking to D.C. to see nation's memorials

Batavia. NY -- More than 100 area veterans and their families will head Thursday morning to Washington, D.C., to see the nation's monuments, museums memorials.

It's the sixth annual Patriot Trip hosted by Assemblyman Steve Hawley. The vets span the generations, from World War II to Afghanistan. They'll return to Batavia on Sunday.

Hawley says a new tradition became part of the trip last year. Four of the veterans will be placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.

Vietnam-era veteran Pinky Osbourn, of Oakfield, has made the trip and says it is peaceful and calming to touch the Vietnam Wall and the names of fallen servicemen she knew.
