Assini Plans Announcement on Possible Congressional Bid

Gates, NY -- A Republican appears poised to run for the 25th District congressional seat now held by Democrat Louise Slaughter.

Gates Town Superviosr Mark Assini tells The Democrat & Chronicle he will announce his decision about a possible candidacy Thursday afternoon at the Italian-American Community Center.

Slaughter is expected to run for a 15th term.

Assini is a former Monroe County legislator and lost a GOP primary for Congress in the old 29th District in 2004.

Republican Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks lost to Slaughter in 2012. She tells WHAM 1180 that Assini's chances will depend on what motivates the electorate in November. For example, she says anger over the SAFE Act in New York may turn out Republican voters against Gov. Cuomo and benefit Assini down the ballot.
