City assaults down, but homicides up.

The Rochester Police Department is out with the crime statistics for 2013.

The department says the city had the second lowest violent crime level in ten years.

Aggravated assaults were down more than 8 percent and reported rapes dropped more than six percent from the previous year. Property crimes were at the lowest level in 25 years.

But The number of homicides rose to 42 last year from 36 the year before. And reported robberies were up ten percent.

Police officials have said in recent months the spike in robberies can be blamed squarely on muggings of young people with cell phones.
