BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ The family of a 14-year-old Buffalo-area girl claims her diabetes is linked to high-fructose corn syrup in a lawsuit seeking $5 million in damages.
The Buffalo News reports that the family this week sued six manufacturers of high-fructose corn syrup in U.S. District Court in Buffalo. The suit claims the girl was never warned about the risks of the common ingredient.
The suit does not identify the family or girl, but says she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when she was 12.
High-fructose corn syrup is 55 percent fructose and 45 percent glucose. Some nutrition experts say this sweetener may pose special risks, but others and the industry reject that claim.
The Corn Refiners Association, a trade group, said the lawsuit is filled with false and unsubstantiated claims.
