Rochester, NY -- It's been exactly five years since Rochester Police Officer Anthony DiPonzio was shot in the head after responding to a call on Dayton Street.
He needed nearly three years of rehabilitation before he could return to work.
It's been a long road back, but he tells WHAM 1180's Bob Lonsberry he now handles background checks of new police recruits and is an instructor at the police academy.
He says he's thankful for the support of his family, his fellow officers, and the community during his long rehab. He says he has learned a lot during his recovery about how hard he can push himself and who his friends are.
