Greece police report crime down in 2013

Greece Police say crime in the town was down by 10 percent over 2012 ... and by 15 percent compared with 2011.

The department released its 2013 Crime Report this afternoon. Chief Todd Baxter says major crimes including homicide, rape and robbery were down by nine percent. Non-violent and non-property theft crimes were down by 11 percent.

Chief Baxter says there were 22 more incidents of violence in Greece over 2013. He says that's partly attributed to shoplifting suspects fighting with security guards who caught them in the act. The chief says that elevates the crime to robbery instead of shoplifting and takes it into the "violent crime" category.

Greece is reporting its crime clearance rate went up by four percent and its response time to priority-one calls down by nine percent.

There were 365 drunken driving arrests in 2013, one for every day of the year.

These statistics are reported to the federal government as part of the nation's unified crime reporting system.
