Local Tax Preparer Fined by Federal Government

A tax preparer who filed false returns to get his clients bigger refunds has been sentenced to five years' probation and will pay the government a $10,000 fine.

Federal prosecutors say 54-year-old Jorge Laurido of Rochester was found guilty of falsely representing taxpayers' income over a three year period so they got refunds they weren't entitled to.

IRS agents estimate Laurido cost the government more than $116,000 over three years before he was caught.
