(13WHAM)Geneseo, N.Y. - A former Conesus man who eluded police for nearly 30 years will finally pay for his crimes.
Gary Gene Smith pleaded guilty to rape, sodomy, and kidnapping involving a 19-year-old victim back in 1983.
He will serve a total of 9 to 29 years in state prison.
The victim, who was in court Thursday, is now 50 years old.
Over the decades police followed thousands of leads and nearly caught him living in Florida under an assumed name. He fled out a window as police burst through the front door.
Ultimately police caught up with him in June after he used his real name and Social Security number at a nursing home in Ohio.
Smith suffers from stage four prostate cancer. He arrived at the Livingston County Courthouse in a wheelchair.
