RG&E warns of phone scam

Rochester Gas and Electric and NYSEG are warning customers of a phone scam that's going around.

Callers say they're from the utility and tell you to buy a "Green Dot MoneyPak Card" to avoid having your service shut off. You're supposed to buy the card, then give the information on how to redeem it to the caller.

RG&E and NYSEG say they never call customers for payment if their account is in good standing. If someone does face making an urgent payment to avoid being shut off, they'd do it directly to the company, not by a money card.
