Rochester man pleads guilty in phony sweepstakes scam

A Rochester man pleaded guilty to federal mail fraud charges in a scam that tried to make elderly victims think they'd won a sweepstakes.

Federal prosecutors said 55-year-old Ricky Miller, Senior was involved in a classic telemarketing scheme run from Jamaica. His associates would call people telling them they'd won a prize, but would have to pay a fee to release the purported winnings. Miller's job was to receive their money and forward it to Jamaica after taking a cut for himself. They defrauded people out of about 300-thousand-dollars.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Miller is looking at a maximum of 30 years in prison.
