The Rochester Planning Commission has given its approval to a controversial housing development for University Avenue.
The planned 99 unit apartment complex would go on the land now occupied by the "40 and 8 Club" veterans organization. It's controversial because the property Morgan Management wants to develop backs up to the George Eastman House - International Museum of Photography. Eastman House Director Bruce Barnes says the project is too big, would block the view from the museum's property and doesn't belong in a Preservation District.
Supporters say it will bring new life into Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts and continue the turn-around of that area.
The Planning Commission vote isn't the final say on this issue. Because it's in a Preservation District, the development plan now goes back to the City Preservation Board for final approval.
