(13WHAM)Albany, N.Y. - The New York State Senate approved a bill that would exempt retired police officers from some parts of the New York Safe Act.
The Albany Times Union reports that the measure came up for a vote just before 2 a.m. Friday.
It passed 49 to 14.
The bill, which passed the Assembly in May, would allow retired police officers to keep assault weapons and high-capacity magazines they had purchased during their time on the force.
Governor Cuomo has not yet commented on the bill.
The Safe Act was passed and signed in January.
It set a seven-bullet limit for magazines, increased penalties for illegal gun possession and required mental health professionals to report concerns about gun-owning patients.
