Sen. Schumer Proposes Prison to Discourage Cell Phone Thefts

Rochester, Ny -- Senator Charles Schumer is proposing legislation to make stealing cell phones less attractive -- and possibly lower the robbery rate in Rochester.

Under his proposal, tampering with a stolen cell phone's unique ID number to reactivate it would be a crime subject to up to five years in prison.

City police have blamed cell phone thefts for a spike in robbery numbers this year, even as other crime numbers have fallen.

Schumer will be in Rochester Tuesday to give more details of his legislation.
