Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand want the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to set aside at least $30 million from their budget for dredging harbors and other infrastructure improvements along the Great Lakes.
New York's two U.S. Senators signed off on a letter along with a dozen others representing all the Great Lakes states.
They all say the lakes are a major transportation route, especially for raw materials through the interior of the nation. But they say many of the ports along that route desparately need to be dredged out and need their docks and other facilities repaired.
