Sheriff Won't Get Hefty Pay Raise

Sheriff Won't Get Hefty Pay Raise

Rochester N.Y.-The Monroe County Legislature has approved County Executive Maggie Brooks' $1 billion budget for 2014, minus a controversial pay raise for Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn.

Republicans introduced an amendment to hold the sheriff's pay at $136,700, dropping a budgeted 27 percent pay raise. That headed off Democrats who were about to introduce the same measure.

Democratic Leader Carrie Andrews said the raise wasn't appropriate.

The Democrats tried to undo a cut in county daycare subsidies for working poor families, but the Republicans defeated it on on a party line vote. That means close to 500 fewer children will get subsidized daycare next year. Democrats say that's going to cost more in the long run that it saves.
