Governor Cuomo's office warned parents, guardians and young adults today about a growing trend of child identity theft. Young people often don't learn they've been victimized until they get old enough to begin applying for loans, credit cards and apartment leases.
Getting hold of a child's social security number is enough for a thief to create a false identity to fraudulently obtain credit. That leaves the victim's credit damaged and often it goes undetected for years.
The governor said it's a good idea to get a credit check on your child's name every so often and take immediate action if you find any activity.
