State warns of tax scam

Governor Cuomo’s office is warning of an elaborate telephone and email tax scam that tries to make you believe you owe money to Uncle Sam.

Here’s how it works: you get a call from someone claiming to be either an IRS or state Tax Department agent. They demand money and threaten you with fines, arrest and even deportation….because in some cases, the scam has been targeted at recent immigrants. They want payment through a money transfer or pre-loaded debit card.

The scam is elaborately prepared. They're able to spoof the phone number they're calling from and fool your caller ID into saying they're the Internal Revenue Service. They may even have the last four digits of your Social Security Number.

The state says both New York and the IRS always make first contact by letter if you owe back taxes, never on the phone. Period. They say you should hang up immediately if somebody claims to be calling from the tax office.
