State highway officials say steel repairs are underway on the Irondequoit Bay Bridge -- reinforcing beams under the bridge floor to provide additional strength.
The State Transportation Department found the steelwork supporting the bridge deck was more deteriorated than expected during last year's construction work. Work to fix the problem started last week and is ongoing.
The state says the bridge is safe for traffic, but the outer lanes have been closed since October. They're due to open again by the end of March.
