Vote Expected Tonight To Clear Hurdle for Costco Project

Rochester, NY -- State and local officials say they have cleared the last hurdle for construction to start on the Costco store at the CityGate site. The state has granted permission to the County to move the Children’s Detention Center from the Costco site to the state-owned Industry Residential Center campus in Rush.

A county budget impasse had threatened to stall the relocation, but county and city officials reached a consensus agreement and will vote Tuesday night to support the funding needed to move the detention center.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren says it is important that the city support every opportunity to create living wage jobs, and she stressed that in discussions with members of the Democratic caucus in the County Legislature who had blocked the funding vote.

Costco plans to open in October and will anchor the CityGate project, which will also include a hotel, an apartment complex on the Erie Canal, and other retail and office space.
