Rochester, NY -- The story of the heroics of an 8-year-old boy who died saving relatives in a Penfield fire has reached across the country, and a basketball coach in Wisconsin has a special offer to the family.
The head coach of the Silver Lake College program tells WHAM 1180 he wants his players to serve as pallbearers at the funeral of Tyler Doohan of East Rochester.
Coach Phil Budervic says he saw the story about Tyler on the web and it moved him. He says his offer is part of the mission of his college, which is about compassion and community. And he says while our culture holds up many people as mentors and calls them heroes, what Tyler did was exceptional and requires doing the right thing.
He says he plans to talk Thursday with the fire chief in East Rochester to try to feel out whether the idea is doable.
