Rochester, NY -- Retired NFL player and Rochester native Roland Williams is going forward with his plan for the Champion Academy, a mentorship summer camp for up to 500 of the city's at-risk teenage boys.
He plans to run it at Charlotte High School for two weeks, starting August 4. And he says football is only a small part of the program. He says it gives structure for mentors to work with boys on leadership and conflict resolution skills, financial literacy and social etiquette.
The city school district is fronting Williams $34,000, not including transportation costs.
He also says he's putting up his own money, soliciting donations and still hopeful the city council will approve funding.
